Chinese New Year Lunch

The menu may look like I am celebrating Chinese New Year but my family and I always like to have chinese dishes on the table during Chinese New Year. Just to get into CNY mood and to get our neighbours envious of the smell coming out of our kitchen. Did I mentioned I live in chinese neighbourhood where there's only 2 malay houses around my area?

Unlike the chinese, we're having big lunch not dinner. I did all the cooking today.

Sweet Sour Prawn

It was Abah who supposed to make the sweet sour prawn. I only prepared the ingredients...but he wanted me to cook this time. Haiya...I never cook sweet sour from scratch before. I can cook using the ready-made sauce one but not like this one with gallangal, tomato puree and stuffs. I took the challenge and cooked my first Abah's own sweet sour recipe. The dish is actually like "3 rasa" because he added the chilli paste.

It doesn't taste as good as my dad's but can eat laa...I need to make it more sour coz I put too much honey/sugar in this one. Lesson learnt! And a tip...Mak said that I should add vineger to make it more sour. I thought tomatoes and its puree brought enough soury taste.

Mixed Vegetable with Shitake Mushroom

The mix vege is from my own recipe as it is very simple one...The key to this dish is to be generous on the oyster sauce and the right thickness when using the potato starch. U don't want it to be too mushy or too thick.

Coated Fried Fish

For the fish dish, I just coated the fish (I used Kerapu/Caruppa) with flour + salt + Sesame oil and deep fry until crispy. Garnish with brocolli. I like eating brocolli...the texture and the taste if you eat it on its own...nyummmyyy. By the way, the 2 pieces of bread were used to absorb the excess grease.

Too bad the fish is not fresh anymore (been in the fridge almost a month).

Brocolli Soup

All the above dishes lack gravy. So I had to make a simple black pepper soup with brocolli in case my plate is too dry.

So that's all...I'm getting ready to accompany my mom to Jusco...where else..Maluri lohh. Need to buy BBQ stuffs for our family outing plan at Congkak this friday (InsyaAllah kalau jadi).

Wishing all of you who celebrate Chinese New Year...
